Castell Howell Foods
Who We Are
Castell Howell Foods are one of the largest independent food wholesaler to the foodservice sector in the UK. From the company inception in 1988, the business has grown to employ in excess of 750 staff members, listing a range of over 14,000 products and delivering approx. 1000 pallets daily on 160 vehicles.
Castell Howell are proud of their Welsh agricultural roots, and promote local and regional foods when available and commercially viable. The range of Welsh dairy products, meats, dry and frozen food is unparalleled and the company is proud to act as an intermediary for many indigenous businesses, purchasing in excess of £40 million of food and services from Welsh suppliers in 2018.
Our History
The history of the company stems from Castell Howell Farm, located some 3 miles north of Carmarthen, and lending its name to the company. As a pedigree dairy farmer Brian Jones, his family and the entire industry felt the impact of the milk quota when introduced in 1984. In addition to the quota, changes in the supply chain of chickens that Brian reared for a retailer, led to the decision to diversify into food wholesaling.
As sales of chicken to local restaurants and butchers shops grew, Brian saw an opportunity to service the customers with a wider range of frozen produce such as chips, scampi and the old favourite black forest gateaux!
High service levels, flexibility in delivery and product range saw the company, Castell Howell Frozen Foods (as it was called), continue its growth. Consequently in 1993 the business moved from the farm to a new site in Pensarn, Carmarthen. Further expansion in lorries, staff and the product range led to the opening of the Cash and Carry and non-frozen product range.
After numerous extensions to the premises in Carmarthen, the decision was taken to build a new depot in Cross Hands. In 2007, the delivered wholesale operation relocated to it’s current head quarters in Cross Hands Food Park.
The Cash and Carry remains in Carmarthen, and the main depot is now supported by 4 satellite depots in Merthyr Tydfil, Avonmouth, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Chirk. Additionally the manufacturing arm encompasses catering butchery, sandwich and savoury manufacture, bakery, preserves, cured meats and a fresh fish operation.
